This is why this river drying up is big news

The Euphrates River first makes an appearance early on in the Bible — straight out of the Genesis gate. But where the Euphrates takes on even greater importance is towards the end of the Bible, in the book of Revelation.

And there are some pretty specific criteria about how this famous river in the Fertile Crescent will undergo some massive changes as the End of Days approach.

As you can read in Revelation 16:12 (ESV):

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.

So, could the mighty Euphrates be showing any signs of drying up?

I’ll let you decide for yourself…

Here’s what the Euphrates looked like as recently as October of 2005:

And this is what parts of it look like today:

Drying Euphrates threatens disaster in Syria — France 24

According to Israel 365 News:

“Two dams in northern Syria face imminent closure which would leave about three million people without any access to electricity.”

In the Tishrin Dam in northern Syria, water levels have dropped five meters. If water levels fall just another 10 centimeters, they’ll be at the “dead level” where turbines can longer produce energy.

And it’s not just the war-torn Syrians who are at risk.

According to this article, Iraq, which also depends on the Euphrates, faces troubles of its own.

It’s also interesting to note that this doesn’t just relate to New Testament End Times prophecies.

As the drought continues and the waters continue to drop, rabbis in Israel are also linking it to a prophecy in the book of Jeremiah 50:38–39:

A drought against its waters, that they be dried up! For it is a land of idols; They are besotted by their dread images. Assuredly, Wildcats and hyenas shall dwell [there], And ostriches shall dwell there; It shall never be settled again, Nor inhabited throughout the ages.

We’ll continue to monitor the Middle East for any new developments, but prophecy watchers out there should keep their eyes on the Euphrates.

I’ll be back soon with an update on another river that takes the stage as the End Times get underway…
